The Yuletide holidays are a time for celebration and festivity.

It’s also a practical time for beards since Christmas is celebrated during the winter season and a beard is your best way to ward off the cold from your face. Pair these two together and you get some amusing holiday beard trends that are guaranteed to make your December an even more festive month.
The fact that Santa Claus, the OG poster guy for the season, wears an awesome wintry beard certainly helps with the holiday trends. But did you know that this traditional depiction was an American creation?
The original St. Nick didn’t have a white beard. In fact, he wasn’t white at all. It was Thomas Nast, the Father of American Cartoon, who first drew the Santa Claus depiction that we all grew up with: the jolly, fat, bearded old guy dressed in a red coat and smoking a pipe. Later on, Coca Cola began using this Santa Claus image as the centerpiece for their advertising campaign which led to its popularity all over the world and became the iconic image we all recognize today.
Naturally, a lot of beard trends have sprung up during the season to pay homage to St. Claus’s beard. To help get you into the holiday spirit (as if you needed any help), we’ve listed 6 wacky holiday beard trends that make celebrating Xmas even more fun this season.
1. Joining a Real Bearded Santa Group
2. Surfing the Waves as Santa Claus
3. Decorating Your Beard as a Christmas Tree
4. Putting on Festive Glitter on Your Beard
5. Lighting Up Your Facial Hair
6. Dressing Up Your Beard with Knitwear
1. Joining a Real Bearded Santa Group
For some guys, becoming a Santa can be a career. And we’re not talking about a seasonal gig. For the members of the Fraternal Order of Real Bearded Santas (FORBS), it’s a year-round gig.
The Los Angeles-based FORBS was created in 2008 to unite natural-bearded Santa Claus impersonators. Most of the 350 members are retirees who have taken up Santa Claus impersonation as a way to supplement their Social Security checks.
Since then, a lot of other Santa Claus groups have been organized elsewhere for learning and networking events. Some even have nice benefits. So if you want to put your natural white beard to good use, this gig might be for you.
2. Surfing the Waves as Santa Claus
In sunny California where surfers are plenty, the Christmas season brings Santa out to the beach.
The annual Surfing Santa Competition is a two-day surfing and stand up paddle competition where locals and visitors compete dressed as Santa Claus. It’s a charity surf event that aims to raise money to benefit Surfers Healing which is an international non-profit that gives surfing lessons to children with autism.
It’s for a noteworthy cause and an Instagram-worthy event. If you want to ride on a surfboard than a sleigh, this should be right up your alley. Remember to put some extra beard oil before you surf!
3. Decorating Your Beard as a Christmas Tree
Instead of putting up a Christmas tree in your home, how about wearing a mini-Christmas tree for the holidays?
It’s one of the season-specific beard styling trends that crop up every now and then. If you’ve got a full beard, you can put on some clip-on decorative balls so that you’ll have a Yuletide tree hanging by your chin. You can use it as an accessory for your holiday office party.
While there is the risk of making you look ridiculous, we’ll have you know that when it first came out, it proved to be immensely popular that stocks ran out quickly. It’s also for a good cause since the proceeds are going to Beard Season—an Australian charity non-profit engaged in raising awareness about melanoma.
4. Putting on Festive Glitter on Your Beard
If colorful decorative balls are too mild for your tastes, how about amping up the glitz by putting glitter on your beard.
A glitter beard is one holiday party accessory that you can even utilize for New Year’s Eve. It can be messy putting glitter on, but hey, it’s the holidays. One can be forgiven for that. The trick to it though is to prep up the beard carefully. Dampen the beard or put hairspray on it before shaking glitter all over it. Just don’t inhale the glitter while you’re putting it on and you’ll be okay.

Whatever trend you decide to subject your beard to this holiday season, always remember to trim it first. Beard grooming shouldn’t be just a trend but a real routine that every man with facial hair should do regularly.

5. Lighting Up Your Facial Hair
If you’re worried about how glitter might not be eco-friendly for the environment, you can ditch those for some real Xmas lights.
These nano LED lights are unobtrusive and easily clipped on to your beards. Never mind that there’s a slight chance that you’ll electrocute your face off especially when you spill your drink on your beard. But it’s a rare chance for a Christmas tree to be burned down by its electric light, so yeah, you’ll probably be better off wearing these fairy lights on your beard. Just keep a fire extinguisher nearby, just in case.
6. Dressing Up Your Beard with Knitwear
Why wear a Xmas sweater to the party when you can have a beard knitwear instead? Not that your facial hair needs any warming. Hair keratin is basically protein. But together with the beard knitwear, it sure can help keep your mug warm, especially if you don’t have a thick beard to help you ward off the cold.
